I've been drumming since my teen years, playing with exceptional musicians in an eclectic array of genres, including Rock, Jazz, Blues, Soul, Latin, Dance, Pop, R&B, Country, Gospel, Rap, and Musical Theatre (which includes everything!). Among my many influences, the greatest has been my drum teacher, Mark T, a superb instructor and wonderful role mode for an up and coming youth.
While I enjoy teaching and playing drums, I work as a Communication faculty member at Grand Canyon University. I earned my Master’s degree in Professional Development with a Communication concentration at Amberton University. Professional development describes my teaching philosophy, with communication as the key to success.
Fittingly, I bring a communicative attitude of professional development to my drum students, realizing that each person is unique. I will work with you, my student, to create a learning path tailored to your needs. My goal is to see you develop your unique style of musicianship and thereby find joy in drumming—a joy that is contagious to others.
My teaching occurs when you and I meet live. It is not a pool of videos from great drummers and teachers that you can access at any time. Those are valuable, and I don't compete with them. I simply offer old-school personalized lessons, one-on-one with you in real time, which will always be the most valuable form of lessons. You and I meet live so that we can talk and work through your drumming progress. I encourage you to use those other resources as well, as they are valuable in their own right.
"Mark is a superb drummer and teacher. Mark is understanding and patient. At first I had trouble with my drum roll, but instead of having me work on the same exercise over and over, he let me do a variety of exercises that included a drum roll to help get the feel and to keep things interesting. He puts the needs of his students first.”—JS
"Mark's easygoing teaching style and patience creates an atmosphere that allows me to feel comfortable even when I am struggling to comprehend a new concept. Mark is an experienced musician, and his combination of demonstrations, written material, and audio files have inspired me to believe that I can do this."—NM
We do personal lessons in real time, and we will determine a weekly day and time that works for us. We connect through Zoom, placing our devices strategically and moving them as needed. Oh, and the little guy on the drum is Saylor, the jazz cat.
As the weeks unfold, we will balance our focus among three areas:
After a lesson ends, I will email you any new lessons that we worked on so that you can practice them during the week. I write the lessons in "finale," and you can play them back while reading them. You'll just need to tap or click the button below and download Finale Notepad for free. If you don't have a drumset yet, you can get a practice pad to start.
"Drum lessons with Mark have been one of the best experiences my son has ever had. Every time I ask how lessons went his comment is 'Amazing'. That is how he really feels when he walks out of a lesson: AMAZING."—HS
"Mark has lesson plans well thought out and individualized to meet the needs of the student. I appreciate his patience, the fact that he starts and ends lessons on time, and is accessible for questions in between lessons."—LI
"Just after my 40th birthday I decided to be a drummer. Mark's personalized method adapted to my interests and introduced me to styles I didn't know. Now, just before my 41st birthday, I can play along with my favorite songs, improvise on blues, rock and Latin rhythms."—MB
"Mark has been a wonderful coach, adapting to my skill and interests. He keeps you progressing through lessons even if you can't master it right away. You will eventually as I have. My session with Mark is something I always look forward to. Always accessible."—PK
"Mark is a wonderful teacher. Not only does he have the knowledge and experience to teach, but he is also patient and willing to adjust his lesson plan to fit my needs. Mark will break down the lesson and make sure that you understand. He will go out of his way to be involved with your interests. We are so happy we found him."—JS
"I look forward to my drum lesson every week with Mark. The first lesson is a great way to be introduced and to talk about your goals. I have been taking lessons for less than 6 months and can already play a couple of songs! The real highlight is Mark's flexibility. I love how the process has gone. It is a fun experience!"—GZ
